It is often said that power is Mara’s corruption.

If this is true, then wealth is his devout mistress.

In the years following a great consolidation of imperial power, tales began to stir, whispered on pale winds.

Over time, the whisper became a roar; a silent tempest raging behind closed doors and dancing on a hundred, hundred ears.

The tales told first of an Emperor possessed of insatiable avarice, a gluttony for all that glitters and glows.

Naturally, they then tell second of the immeasurable wealth held within the high walls of the royal palace, nestled snuggly in the heart of the capital: Yunzhou.

The crowning jewel of this hoard was said to possess a shine so brilliant as to dim all other gems, as though it were a sun sat amidst grains of sand.

Our story does not begin with power or wealth however, but ambition.

As, for one enterprising thief, the tales proved too tempting to resist.

The modest town of Xijiang that she called home for the past fifteen years was beginning to feel barren in its prospects..

Thus, she decided to stow away aboard a skyship, destined for the capital and embark upon a heist promising to endow her career with unimaginable wealth, incomparable glory and a slew of songs and stories of her own.

ACT 1: SCENE 2 – SCRIPT: [EXT/INT: XIJIANG TOWN – NIGHT].

JING

(Musing)

If I am to reach the capital, I will need to find an ‘accommodating’ skyship.

I don’t fancy walking all the way.

GUARD #1

(Frustrated, ranting mildly to himself)

..Sick of this miserable town, why couldn’t that captain take me on?

I would have accepted duty in his charge without pay, anything to get to Yunzhou and away from here.

There’s ample room on those merchant skyships too, it would’ve hardly hurt his trade.

Pah..

JING

(Interested, quiet)

Ample room hm?

Sounds promising.

I believe the commercial docks are on the highest levels to the east.

TRANSITION: GAMEPLAY ENDS, CUTSCENE BEGINS.

JING climbs aboard the skyship, which promptly takes off.

NARRATOR (EMPEROR)

(NON-DIEGETIC. Steadily paced, slightly mysterious tone.)

Quickly, quietly and she was away. None saw her go.. And none would see her arrive.

TRANSITION: FADE IN FROM BLACK

TRANSITION: CUTSCENE BEGINS.

JING departs the skyship carefully, hunkering down in the shadow of some crates.

JING

(Quiet, pensive)

I think I can see the palace from here..

There must be a way in.

TRANSITION: CUTSCENE ENDS, GAMEPLAY BEGINS.

ACT #3  SCENE 2 – SCRIPT: [INT: YUNZHOU ROYAL PALACE – DAY].

As YING proceeds deeper into the palace complex, she begins to notice more and more books. Some strewn across shelves, pages open and wanton, others stacked neatly into cases or on top of tables.

YING

(Perplexed)

Is it just my imagination, or am I seeing more books the further I infiltrate?

Who needs so many books..?

YING approaches the high, double doored entrance to what she assumes is the vault containing the treasure she seeks.

YING

(Hushed excitement)

This must be it!

YING crosses the threshold, the camera tracks her movement, on the other side of the doorway, the screen is black.

TRANSITION: DIEGETIC CAMERA WIPE TO BLACK.

YING

(Disbelief)

What..?!

TRANSITION: FLASH TO GAME SCREEN. LIBRARY INTERIOR.

YING stands in the vaulted, high-ceilinged library near the entryway, towering rows of bookcases surround her.

(Confused, mildly agitated)

I don’t understand; where is the treasure?

YING strides forwards into the room and notices a plinth in the centre of the room.

(Exalting)

Ah! This has got to be the jewel!

Moving towards the plinth at a faster pace, YING suddenly stops before it, looking down at the item, which transpires to be another aged tome.

(Agitated)

No..! What is this?!

EMPEROR

(calm)

A book.

The EMPEROR walks towards the centre at a measured pace, quite alone and harmless.

A very special book.

YING

(confused, wary)

What do you mean? What about the treasure..? The jewel..?

The EMPEROR chuckles.

EMPEROR

(Amused, genial)

Ah, I see the myth spreading outside my walls has managed to find its way inside.

You see, I am greedy. It is true. But not for gold or gems.

No, my treasure is knowledge and what greater source of such than all that surrounds you?

YING

(Crestfallen)

..And the jewel?

EMPEROR

It lies before you. This is my most prized tome; a very ancient and most interesting novel indeed.

Giving a small pause, the EMPEROR then continues.

(Knowing)

Would you like me to read it to you?

TRANSITION: FADE TO BLACK.

END OF ACT #3
